LME Aluminum 3M Select trades $6.25 higher to $3176 at 8:26:40 AM

(Bloomberg) – China’s aluminum exports hit a monthly record in June, as smelters and traders rushed to fill a global shortfall resulting from the conflict in the Middle East. Shipments last month from the world’s largest aluminum producer surged 45% from a year earlier to 710,000 tons, according to customs data released Tuesday. With domestic output growing, Chinese smelters have been seeking to boost overseas sales as the war clouds the supply outlook in the Persian Gulf region, another major production hub for the light metal. China’s June shipments were also 13% higher than in May, signaling that firms were keen to export as the domestic economy slowed. The country’s aluminum inventories have declined by over 30% from their April peak to 1.04 million tons as of Monday, according to researcher Mysteel Global. Aluminum prices fell on Friday after Emirates Global Aluminium PJSC, the Middle East’s top aluminum producer, said it restarted a key alumina plant that was knocked offline by drone and missile strikes in late March. However, hostilities between the US and Iran have since intensified once more, with President Donald Trump reinstating a US blockade of Iranian ships and demanding a 20% reimbursement on other cargoes crossing the Strait of Hormuz.
